If you’re looking for a way to get outside in Manhattan, Kansas, you’ll quickly realize there are more trails here than most people expect. Between the Flint Hills, the Blue River, and Tuttle Creek Lake, the area offers a mix of scenic prairie hikes, shaded wooded trails, and easy paved paths for families, runners, and cyclists.

Whether you want a serious hike with elevation or just a quick walk with the kids or the dog, here are some of the best hiking and walking trails in Manhattan.

Konza Prairie Nature Trail

If you only hike one trail around Manhattan, it should probably be Konza Prairie.

This trail offers one of the most authentic Flint Hills hiking experiences you’ll find anywhere in Kansas. Maintained by The Nature Conservancy and Kansas State University, the trail features rolling prairie hills, wide open views, and beautiful sunsets.

There are three loop options:

  • 2.6 miles

  • 4.4 miles

  • 6.2 miles

Expect moderate elevation (around 400–500 feet depending on the loop), which makes it a great workout compared to most Kansas hikes. Just note that dogs are not allowed here.

If friends or family visit Manhattan, this is usually the first place locals take them.

Linear Trail

The Linear Trail is one of the most accessible trails in Manhattan.

Stretching roughly 9 miles, this mostly paved path loops around large parts of the city and connects several parks and neighborhoods. Because of its smooth surface and gentle grade, it’s perfect for:

  • Walking

  • Jogging

  • Biking

  • Families with strollers

  • Dog owners

Many locals like to hop on the trail near South Manhattan Avenue and ride or walk toward downtown.

Stagg Hill Trails

If you’re looking for something a little quieter, the Stagg Hill Trails are a great option.

Located just outside the main part of town, these trails offer around 3 miles of wooded paths with moderate elevation and scenic overlooks. Compared to Konza Prairie, Stagg Hill tends to be less crowded, which makes it a favorite for locals who want a more peaceful hike.

The trails are also dog-friendly, making them a solid option for a quick outdoor escape.

Anneberg Park Trails

For families, Anneberg Park is one of the easiest and most convenient places to go for a walk.

The paved trails here are about 1.5 miles total, mostly flat, and loop around ponds and open green space. The park also includes:

  • A large dog park

  • Playgrounds

  • Plenty of open space for kids to run around

It’s a great spot for a short evening walk, especially if you want something relaxed after dinner.

Cottonwood Nature Trail (Tuttle Creek)

Located near Tuttle Creek Dam, the Cottonwood Nature Trail is a short but peaceful walk.

This 0.9-mile loop is shaded, quiet, and often feels a little removed from the city. Along the trail you’ll find benches, interpretive signs, and occasional wildlife sightings.

Early mornings here can be especially calm — it’s not unusual to spot deer along the trail.

Blue River Trail

The Blue River Trail is a favorite for runners and cyclists.

Stretching roughly 3 miles, the trail runs through wooded areas along the river and connects into the Linear Trail system. One of the best parts about this trail is the tree cover, which keeps it noticeably cooler during the summer.

If you enjoy trail running or longer bike rides, this is a great route to explore.

Tuttle Creek Canyon Trail

Yes — Manhattan actually has a canyon.

The Tuttle Creek Canyon Trail is a short 0.9-mile out-and-back hike located near the spillway inside Tuttle Creek State Park. While the trail isn’t long, it features rocky terrain and around 100 feet of elevation, making it a surprisingly good workout.

Many visitors are surprised by the rock formations and cliffs, which are not what most people expect when they think of Kansas.

Spillway State Park Trail

If you want an easy scenic walk, the Spillway Trail near Tuttle Creek is a great option.

This roughly 1-mile path runs alongside the spillway and offers nice views of the water. It’s an easy walk that works well for visitors, families, or anyone looking for a relaxed outdoor afternoon.

Final Thoughts

One of the underrated things about living in Manhattan, Kansas is how easy it is to get outside. Within just a few minutes of town, you can experience everything from rolling Flint Hills prairie to shaded river trails and scenic lake views.

Whether you’re looking for a long hike, a quick walk, or a place to bike with the family, there’s a trail nearby that fits the day.
